The ACP-LS Editorial Board is accountable for developing the strategy and content for “Commercial Matters”, the ACP-LS newsletter, and the ACP-LS blog. Editorial board members possess expertise in sales and marketing, geared toward the ACP-LS community of ~60,000 people globally, who work in commercial roles for suppliers of life science products and services. Those companies include contract research and contract manufacturing organizations (CROs & CMOs), scientific equipment manufacturers, reagents manufacturers, and consultancies. In addition to guiding the content and strategy, board members act as ambassadors for the ACP-LS and its newsletter and blog content.

Alan Gerstein, (Editor-in-Chief) Digital Writer and Content Strategist, DigitalWritingPro.com
Trained as a biochemist, Alan Gerstein spent most of his biotech career developing strategies to better support the training and education needs of the life science research community. As Manager of a technical support group for Pharmacia Biotech (now GE), he spoke with thousands of researchers looking for answers and problem resolution regarding a variety of reagent kits and many types of instruments. He incorporated much of this experience into the lab-based textbook Molecular Biology Problem Solver, published by John Wiley and Sons in 2001. He and his team also developed training programs for many dozens of life science sales representatives and their often-reluctant managers.
More recently Alan was the Director of Interactive Content at Ogilvy CommonHealth, a pharmaceutical advertising agency. Currently Alan is the ACP-LS Digital Editorial Director and Sr. Director of Interactive Content at IMP Digital Studios.
Garrett Bennett, U.S. Sales Manager for Next Generation Sequencing, Bioo Scientific
Garrett Bennett is the U.S. Sales Manager for Next Generation Sequencing at Bioo Scientific. Mr. Bennett utilizes his diverse and strong business development background to execute strategic decisions influencing new market strategies, direction, and approach to increase growth for Bioo Scientific throughout the Life Science industry. He is responsible for training, developing, and implementing the internal and external sales force throughout the U.S. including direct support to all key accounts. Before merging to the business development side of Biotech, Mr. Bennett started in the lab as an assistant in cancer research and in Pharmaceutical R&D for Allergy Immunotherapy. Mr. Bennett’s previous experience developing innovative start-up companies, in management, and consistent recognition as a top sales performer, allowed him to transition easily and apply his skills from the lab to Sales Management for Next Generation Sequencing. Mr. Bennett’s unique experience in both management and in the lab has given him the ability to effectively implement the best plan of action for a reliable and supportive team that can provide both short and long term essential growth within the company.
Joan Boyce, VP and GM, Biocompare
Joan Boyce has over 25 years of experience in life science publishing management, sales, editorial leadership, and content innovation. Ms. Boyce is currently the vice president and general manager of Biocompare, the industry’s leading life science marketplace. She has also served as the executive director of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) and as publisher of three life science titles at Reed Business Information where she was responsible for driving top and bottom line growth along with the creation of new revenue streams and digital content platforms. Ms. Boyce also co-founded and served as Vice President at BioSupplyNet, Inc. a company that published the industry’s first online and print buyer’s guide and led the company through a successful acquisition. She started her career as a research associate at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory where she worked with leading cancer researchers studying DNA tumor viruses. From the lab Ms. Boyce made a move into sales, where she was a top performer at Boehringer Mannheim Biochemicals, now Roche Applied Science. Ms. Boyce earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology/Psychology from Bucknell University.
Sheila Burns, Managing Director, Building 12 Communications
Sheila has been in the biotechnology industry for more than 25 years. She has held executive leadership positions at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Applied Biosystems, and LIFE Technologies. In addition, she has molecular diagnostics experience as the leader of the marketing team for Luminex Corporation. She is currently the managing director of Building 12 Communications, LLC, a firm specializing in branding, strategic planning and marketing communications for the biotechnology industry.
Chris Conner, Principal, Words 2 Wow
Chris Conner is the author of several papers and an inventor on two patents in the area of infectious disease. After leaving the lab to pursue a personal dream, he returned to the sciences as a marketing communications manager at Varian, Inc. – both opportunities he is still grateful for. At Varian, he implemented the first-in-the-industry online application fair. The Varian Experience highlighted applications in several segments and featured user-generated content in the form of customer videos about their own work. The unique visual navigation and application focus achieved record interest on a tight budget. Following stints at Agilent and Thermo in global marketing roles, Chris is now the principal at Words 2 Wow, specializing in making content marketing easier and more effective. He also hosts Life Science Marketing Radio, a podcast where marketing leaders inside and outside the industry share creative ideas and practical approaches to increasing marketing ROI.
Anne-Marie Hess, Senior Marketing and Communications Consultant
Anne-Marie Hess is a senior marketing and communications consultant who has provided innovative leadership to marketing, communications, and investor relations departments at global life sciences companies. Ms. Hess has specific expertise in creating and executing strategic marketing and communication plans to build awareness, educate stakeholders, enhance reputation, and drive the growth of corporate brands. She has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University.
Hillary Hewitson, Business Development Manager, Waters Corporation
Hillary Hewitson has worked in the life science market for over 20 years. With nearly 15 years experience at Waters Corporation, she developed a strong understanding of the analytical techniques and challenge of life science applications in a variety of lab functions. And in those roles, she developed and delivered technical training to both customers and field sales reps. Ms Hewitson recently transitioned to a business development role, with a focus on process analysis within the Pharmaceutical sector. She is responsible for the creation and execution of marketing campaigns as well as the technical management of collaborations in an effort to drive business for the use of ACQUITY UPLC technology in process development and commercial operations. Hillary earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Bridgewater State University.
Greg Krueger, Field Marketing Manager, Sartorius-Stedim Biotech
Greg Krueger has nearly 30 years experience in service, marketing, and sales to the life science marketplace. Following a successful stint in research, Greg moved to customer-facing positions in technical service and then marketing for Pharmacia, transitioning to a 15 year sales career with the company and its successors. In 2008, he moved to a start-up company and was a significant contributor to the sales success of Accuri Cytometers. Currently a North American Marketing Manager for Sartorius-Stedim Biotech, he is responsible for membrane chromatography and virus filtration. Greg earned both a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Master of Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management.
Lea Studer is an accomplished marketing communications professional with more than 20 years of experience developing and implementing compelling, award-winning marketing and communication strategies and tactics in the global life sciences industry.
Prior to joining SCORR, Studer worked at MDS Pharma Services, where she directed strategy, design and implementation of marketing and sales materials across all business units.
At SCORR, she leads the communications and digital team and works with clients to establish persuasive messaging and utilize public relations, media and social media to effectively reach global target audiences. In addition, Studer oversees trade show and event coordination activities for all clients.
